Indonesia's Nickel Exports Strong in July, China Becomes Biggest Buyer

According to the latest information released by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, in July 2024, Indonesia's total 

exports of nickel products reached a staggering 954,417 physical tonnes, once again highlighting its leading position 

in the global nickel market.

In terms of specific products, nickel-iron (NPI) remains the mainstay of exports, with a high export volume of 726,257 tonnes 

in July, accounting for the vast majority of total exports. In addition, exports of ferronickel (FeNi), high ice nickel, nickel sulphate,

 mixed hydroxide precipitates (MHP) and electrolytic nickel also performed well, at 15,713 tonnes, 34,543 tonnes, 14,000 tonnes, 

116,233 tonnes and 4,883 tonnes respectively.

China's position as the largest buyer of Indonesian nickel products was further consolidated in July. During the month, 

Indonesia exported a total of 876,872 tonnes of nickel products to China, accounting for 91.88% of total exports, a proportion

 that is not only much higher than that of other countries, but also proves once again the close cooperation between

China and Indonesia in the field of nickel resources.

In addition to China, India and Japan are also important export destinations for Indonesian nickel products. 43,967 tonnes 

of nickel products were exported to India in July, accounting for 4.61%, and 6,767 tonnes were exported to Japan, accounting

 for 0.71%. Although these two countries accounted for a relatively small proportion, but is still an integral part of 

Indonesia's nickel exports.

Extending the timeline to January-July, the total export volume of Indonesian nickel products even reached 6,429,210 physical 

tonnes, showing Indonesia's continued stability and strong growth momentum in nickel resource exports. Of these, exports of 

ferronickel (NPI) continued to dominate, reaching 5,113,292 tonnes, while exports of MHP, high ice nickel, nickel sulphate and 

electrolytic nickel all saw varying degrees of growth.
